Lesson 1 / 25

From Search Results to Answers

Explain how AI assistants change brand discovery compared with a list of blue links.

One answer, few names

A classic search engine shows ten links and the user chooses. An AI assistant often writes one answer that names a handful of options, sometimes with source links. Being on page two matters little; being absent from the answer means being invisible for that question. This is why brands now care about being mentioned, recommended and cited by assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and by AI summaries inside search engines.

From searching to asking

People increasingly ask an assistant and get one synthesised answer, with only a few brands named or cited.

Four stages: question, retrieval, answer, citation.

A shopkeeper's recommendation

Asking a trusted shopkeeper "which phone should I buy?" gets you two or three suggestions, not a catalogue. If the shopkeeper has never heard of your phone, you do not make the list.

Be realistic about the numbers

Traffic from AI assistants is usually still small compared with traditional search for most sites, but it is growing and tends to come from people who are already comparing options. Measure your own data before deciding how much to invest.

Quick check: What is the main change AI answers bring to brand discovery?

  • Users stop asking questions
  • Every brand is always listed
  • Only a few brands are named in one synthesised answer
  • Websites become illegal
Answer

Only a few brands are named in one synthesised answer — Answers compress the choice set, so inclusion in the answer matters more than ranking on a long list.
