Lesson 6 / 25

Authority and Third-Party Mentions

Earn credible coverage on sources that assistants and retrieval systems tend to trust.

What others say about you matters

Assistants rarely rely only on a brand's own claims. They lean on independent sources: reputable publications, review and comparison sites, community discussions (such as forums and Q&A sites), encyclopaedic pages, official directories, academic or industry reports and customer reviews. A brand that is regularly and credibly discussed in such places is more likely to be mentioned and described well. This is earned, not purchased as a trick: it comes from real products, real customers, honest reviews, and useful contributions. Study which sources are cited in answers for your category and focus on being genuinely present there.

Which sources are cited, run

I ran this on five made-up cited URLs. A community site appears twice and your own domain is 20% of citations. Counting domains over many answers shows where to focus.

from collections import Counter
from urllib.parse import urlparse

cites = ["https://reddit.com/r/pm/x", "https://acme.example/blog/a",
         "https://g2.com/products/acme", "https://reddit.com/r/saas/y",
         "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanban"]
dom = Counter((urlparse(u).hostname or "").removeprefix("www.") for u in cites)
print(dom.most_common(2), round(dom["acme.example"] / len(cites), 2))

Output:

[('reddit.com', 2), ('acme.example', 1)] 0.2

Contribute, do not spam

Join community discussions only where you can be genuinely helpful and transparent about your affiliation. Spammy self-promotion gets removed, damages trust and can teach models a negative association.

Quick check: Which kind of source do assistants tend to trust more than a brand's own claims?

  • Random strings
  • Anonymous spam
  • Hidden text on your page
  • Independent reviews, reputable publications and community discussion
Answer

Independent reviews, reputable publications and community discussion — Independent corroboration makes claims more believable than self-description alone.
