Install the JDK

Install a JDK from Adoptium, Oracle or your package manager, put java and javac on your PATH, and pick an IDE so the toolchain is ready.

Install & verify

Install from Adoptium (Temurin), Oracle, or your package manager, then check both the runtime and the compiler are on your PATH.

java -version     # runtime
javac -version    # compiler
jshell            # interactive REPL (Java 9+)

Use an IDE

IntelliJ IDEA (Community), Eclipse, or VS Code with the Java extension pack give you autocompletion, one-click run, and a debugger. Well worth it from day one.
